E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is the first holiday film produced by Steven Spielberg, the director of the 1981 blockbuster hit film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and not to be confused with E.T., a lead character in the 1982 John Hart novel.
Seeing as this holiday (Christmas) is relatively ‘new’ in our timeline, Christmas sweaters have always been around as well. Ever since our grandparents time, or a time before – we see these critters pop up on television every now and again to remind us what winter should feel like after we’ve spent so long in t-shirt weather all summer long for those lucky ones!
What Makes E.T.’s sweater so different from any other? First and foremost: sheer
In the 1963 movie (popularly called “E.T.”), the protagonist’s shirt is a colorful Christmas sweater. In 2010 for the 25th anniversary release, Steven Spielberg approved a social media campaign where people took pictures of themselves wearing special re-designed coutumes styled like E.T.’s trademark red and green outfit on Christmas Day. These articles of clothing have been in high demand as they are often worn by people wishing to recapture some nostalgia or to pull some prank too.
This phenomenon accelerated notably with the release of “Stranger Things” where unsurprisingly the Stranger Things characters wore reenacted a collage of recognizable 1980s clothes that often mimicked those from E.T. And this further led to various companies creating franchise related merchandise including holiday themed full parade
The Extra-Terrestrial who became the mascot of Universal Studios Hollywood theme park has starred in The Return of E.T. based on Stephen Spielberg’s iconic coming-of-age story “E.T., The Extraterrestrial”. This is a preview for audiences to see a new member of Sesame Street’s family
This week, Hoda Kotb, a cohost of Today: celebrating Christmas with an extra-terrestrial show, dressed up as an alien for Christmas and got rave reviews around the globe, highlighting nostalgia and inclusiveness.
The movie depicted a gray-skinned, blond-haired society and was based partially on Christian ideology, international political conspiracy theory and contactee folklore.
Arthur Abel’s premise for the movie was that if he could make everyone focus on an “alien” invasion simultaneously, the humans would get it through their heads “that for all its technological wizardry, Earth cannot hope to repel an intruder unless it unites with one mind and one will.”
No one will question how over the top this ugly Christmas sweater is. The design mimics that of an E.T. but it also includes items such as a pentagram, marijuana leaves, and aftermarket gun in the hands of “ET.”
