If you think about it, Christmas trees are a pretty strange tradition. Every December, flourishing firs are chopped down en masse and transported to local farm shops where eager families grapple for the very best one so they can cram it into a cosy corner of their living room and adorn it with all manner of shiny things. It’s bizarre, sure, but nonetheless, it’s a tradition we can’t get enough of.

A tree – be it a real fir or faux – is the centrepiece of any home come Christmas time, so it’s important to make sure it’s looking its finest. But, what should you be looking for to achieve a Rockefeller Center-worthy spruce?

When it comes to tree decorating, there are a number of avenues you can explore, from a traditional colour palette of red and green to chic golden ornaments or, for the maximalists among us, dazzling glitter baubles in a rainbow of hues.

There are no hard and fast rules but, whichever theme you opt for, it’s important to make sure your tree not only reflects your personal taste but also evokes an appropriate level of Christmas cheer. So, if your decorations are looking a little lacklustre after spending the past year buried in a box deep in your attic, consider this your sign to give your tree the stylish makeover it deserves.

How we tested

To make sure you don’t get your tinsel in a tangle this Christmas, we’ve put a range of decorations to the test. From garlands to tree toppers and everything in between, each product was assessed on not only its good looks but also its quality, price and ability to remain steady on the tree without weighing the branches down. And yes, much to our husband’s dismay, this did mean whipping out a mini tree weeks before the big day.

November 20, 2021 – 13:10 GMTSharnaz Shahid Christmas like the royals? How to host a dinner party like Kate Middleton, the Queen and other royals

In need of some inspiration this Christmas? This year, Habitat has joined forces with Party Architect to the royals, Johnny Roxburgh, to reveal his expert hosting advice. He has produced a series of tips around festive entertaining, ranging from the practical to the outlandish. And we know the Queen is a fan!

“The Royal Household is famously, and correctly, very careful about costs,” he explains. “When I organised the annual Christmas dinner which HM The Queen hosted for her staff, I had to find an ingenious way to transform the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace to create a magical party setting without spending money.

“I saved decorations throughout the year to create something beautiful but economic. One year I had a 35-foot-high Russian tree dismantled from another party and re-erected in The Palace Ballroom. I added some more English decorations and it stood looking magnificent flanked by the wonderful chandeliers.” Read Johnny’s fabulous party tips below…

1. Distinctive Door Décor

What better way for a host to make an impact right from the outset… Door makeovers are a hot trend which sparked from lockdown. I usually favour a dazzling royal blue which is the trend of the season. If you do paint your door blue, pair with pops of gold décor (wreaths and baubles) to ensure it looks festive and stylish. Get creative with your wreaths which will leave guests wowed before they’ve even set foot inside.

Christmas gonks — unique little figurines with long bushy beards and knitted hats — are often considered to be the Nordic version of Santa Claus. Inspired by gnomes and hobgoblins found in Scandinavian and Nordic mythology, their popularity has been continuing to surge over the years.

Throughout the festive season, you’ll find Christmas gonks dressed in warm coats, wearing red hats or carrying winter accessories, such as sledges and skis. Looking like miniature versions of Santa Claus, they are available to buy as room decorations, tree decorations, door stops, as well as printed on everything from festive bedding to scatter cushions.

‘We were one of the first to spot the gonk phenomenon and customers are loving them more and more every year,’ Frances O’Sullivan, Christmas Gonk Buyer at Poundland, tells House Beautiful UK. ‘It’s frankly gonkers! Other gonk-mad celebs like Stacey Solomon have driven the trend. Santa better watch out – they’re almost as big as he is. Because our customers love collecting gonks, we’ve developed gonks for every season – watch out for cute pastel coloured Easter gonks in 2022 and our mysterious Halloween gonks are in store now.’

What is a Christmas gonk?

The first mention of a gonk dates as far back as 1600 in Norway, and possibly as early as the 13th century. They are quirky gnome-like figurines with their faces almost entirely covered by a large hat and fluffy beard (you can only see their cute bulbous nose). According to tradition, it’s thought gonks protect homes throughout winter solstice and the festive season.

While they’re not to everyone’s taste, Christmas gonks are certainly showing no sign of slowing down. On that note, take a look at the best Christmas gonks to buy now…
