“Come get ya patties and ya dasheen! Come see Joyce the Wonder Girl!” Such rang out the consistently present patter of patois outside Bathurst tram station in 1971 when Carmel Elias Shoucair would pass out flyers for Joyce’s West Indies, his Jamaican supermarket across the road. “The store was jam-loaded with all that you’d find in Jamaica,” says Kaylah Shoucair, Carmel’s lone youngster. “It was the lone spot around for meat patties and hard, however the racks were likewise loaded with other Jamaican staples: Detail and Tiger Balm, Ferrol Compound and Liqufruta garlic syrup — which posed a flavor like passing yet was astounding for you — and surprisingly these little blue square tabs called ‘Blue’: you put them in your bathwater to avoid detestable spirits.”
Carmel Shoucair’s folks had emigrated from Lebanon to Jamaica as a component of an enormous accomplice of Christians who had confronted strict oppression in the Middle East and who at that point chose the West Indian island because of the security offered by a British settlement.

Where Carmel was interesting and boisterous, Joyce was delicate and refined.
